![]() One project that really caught my fancy was the Armstrong Regenerative radio. I had built and experimented with crystal radios before, but I was ready to move up to something better. I was very lucky because the 1H4 tube the project required was still available, otherwise the project might have ended right there. Of course, I did not have the skill and tools to build the radio as it was described. The specified tube socket and the exact coil form were both unavailable, but half the fun of building this radio came from the opportunity to improvise like using a toilet roll for a coil form and to invent construction techniques that matched my building skills. My regenerative radio from There is a link to my regenerative radio here and at the end of this story. Both this and Armstrong's radio need an 'A' battery and a 'B' battery. It belonged to my namesake, Donald Shure Nelson who was in the Army Air Corp during WWII and was lost over the Mediterranean.Geezerola is just a silly name I chose, you can call your radio anything you want This little radio is functionally identical to Armstrong's and my triode tube radios except, unlike triode vacuum tubes, the crystal in my triode will pass electrons without heating the cathode. ![]() I still have it but not the headphones as well as the original assembly manual. The bass actually could be heard on this crystal set. I found that if I slightly loosened the ear caps of the headphones, the frequency response would reach a lot lower. Of course, the wire coming into the room was aircraft wire!Īt an early age, I appreciated the better sound that could be had with audio equipment. ![]() He went into the attic and strung an antenna around the roof rafters and connected another wire to the drain pipe. He also owned and built Heathkit test equipment and then got into HiFi with kits from Allied Radio Knight-Kits.Īt an early age, he built a Heathkit CR-1 for me. I didn't understand it but messed about with it. As a kid, I was always interested in electronics. ![]()
